Our Philosophy on Tail Docking

At Toy Aussies of Kingwood, every decision we make is guided by one simple principle:

do what’s best for the health, wellbeing, and natural development of our dogs.

One question we occasionally receive from families researching Toy Australian Shepherds is about tail docking.

Traditionally, many Australian Shepherds and Miniature American Shepherds have their tails docked shortly after birth. However, after learning more about the practice and carefully considering our own values, we’ve decided not to dock the tails of our puppies.

For us, allowing our puppies to keep their natural tails aligns with our belief in raising dogs in the most natural and compassionate way possible.

What Is Tail Docking?

Tail docking is the practice of removing a portion of a puppy’s tail, usually within the first few days after birth.

Historically, this was done for working dogs. Some believed shorter tails reduced the risk of injury when herding livestock or working in brush. Over time, docking also became associated with certain breed standards and appearance preferences.

However, for most companion dogs today — including many Toy Aussies raised in family homes — the original working reasons for docking often no longer apply.

Why We Choose Not to Dock

While many responsible breeders still choose to dock, we believe leaving a puppy’s tail intact is the right choice for our program and for the families who adopt from us.

Allowing our puppies to keep their tails simply feels like the most natural and respectful approach to raising them.

Dogs use their tails constantly to communicate how they feel — excitement, curiosity, nervousness, or happiness.

For Toy Aussies of Kingwood, that beginning starts with Luna and Yordi.

They aren’t just our dogs. They’re the heart of our home, the foundation of our program, and the reason we fell in love with Toy Australian Shepherds in the first place.

Meet Luna

Luna is our sweet, intelligent, blue merle girl with a personality that lights up the room. She’s gentle with our kids, incredibly intuitive, and always seems to know when someone needs a little extra love.

Toy Australian Shepherds are known for their loyalty and intelligence, and Luna embodies both. She’s affectionate without being overly clingy, playful without being overwhelming, and confident without being dominant.
